HVAC systems come in many different models with varying features and comfort levels. Therefore, finding reliable information about any given unit can be quite an overwhelming undertaking. For instance, although heat pumps are quite common in homes, homeowners still have lots of questions about how they function and the various problems that they develop. Below are some common questions that people ask about their heat pumps.
There is no one answer to this question. This is because the lifespan of any given unit can vary depending on the model and how well it is maintained. But on average, several surveys have shown that the heat pumps designed in between the 1970s and 1990s last fourteen or fifteen years. However, newer units can last much longer.
Most heat pump problems are repairable. Therefore, it can be quite hard for you to determine the most appropriate time for you to replace your heat pump. Generally, the right time for you to replace your unit is when it starts to develop problems that seem inefficient to repair. For instance, if your unit is 10 years or older, repairing major broken components such as the reversing valve, compressor, or outdoor coil may be a waste of time and money. Although replacing major parts such as the compressor may save you some money in the short run, the truth is that getting a new unit will bring greater efficiency, reduce operation costs, and consequently, save you money in the long run.
The air filter should be checked at least once per month, especially during peak use. If it has collected dirt to impair the flow of air, it should be cleaned or replaced. Most air filters are designed to last between six months to one year.
Many people wonder if it is appropriate to put a cover over their outdoor unit. The answer is that it is okay to do so as long as the cover is far enough from the unit so that it does not impede the flow of air. In any case, the cover is going to protect the unit from elements such as snowfall, rainfall, and falling leaves and branches. However, the cover is not really needed since heat pumps are usually made for outdoor use.
